A Disturbing Incident

Just yesterday, I received a call while sitting at my desk from a telemarketer. After informing him that he was calling someone at their place of business, I asked him if he would (i) remove me from his organization's list of phone numbers to call, and (ii) who exactly it was that provided his company with my contact information.

Well, I was 0 for 2 on the attempt to make something useful come out of that call. And then I got another call from the same organization today. Surprisingly, (cough) I was once again reassured that I will no linger be receiving calls from the Mortgage Lender Network. Also, unsurprisingly, this company cannot tell me who is shopping my business information around the Web. (They did say it was a direct marketing agency in New York. That narrows it down to only half of the scumbags out there. Thanks!) And, finally, when I asked them for a way to contact their offices and put a complaint in about their business practices, the only contact information I was given pointed me to an unresolved host name. I did find this site for the Mortgage Lenders Network USA, Inc. They seem to be in the same line of work as the outsourced telephone workers from India who were trying to convince me to take out another loan on my recently purchased home.

So far the only harassment coming from whoever is writing my business information on the equivalent of the Internet's bathroom wall was a call from somewhere in New Orleans, trying to tell me I was somebody else, and asking me when was I going to drop by their office so I could answer some questions. It only took two calls to my desk to straighten that mess out.

Feel free to use the comments section to tell me all about your own office annoyances of the telemarketing variety...
