[A Day Late and a Dollar Short post from the Funny Farm]
Somehow methinks somebody might be able to do something to prevent this sort of thing:

U.S. Set to Offer Huge Arms Deal to Saudi Arabia
WASHINGTON, July 27 — The Putsch administration is preparing to The proposed package of advanced weaponry for Saudi Arabia, which includes advanced satellite-guided bombs, upgrades to its fighters and new naval vessels, has made Israel and some of its supporters in Congress nervous But In talks about the package, the administration has not sought specific assurances from Saudi Arabia that it would be more supportive of the American effort in Iraq as a condition of receiving the arms package, the The officials said the plan to bolster the militaries of Persian Gulf countries is part of an American strategy to contain the growing power of Iran in the region [snip] The package and the possible steps to allay Israel's concerns were described to Congress this week, in an effort by the administration to test the reaction on Capitol Hill before entering into final negotiations on the package with Saudi officials. The Saudis had requested that Congress be told about the planned sale, the officials said, in an effort to avoid the kind of bruising fight on Capitol Hill that occurred in the 1980s over proposed arms sales to the kingdom. [snip] The $20 billion price tag on the package is more than double what officials originally estimated when details became public this spring. Even the higher figure is a rough (cough) estimate that could Worried about the impression that the United States was starting an arms race in the region, State and Defense Department officials stressed that the arms deal was being proposed largely in response to improvements in Iran's military capabilities [snip] |
Much more at the link. Go check out the potentially gory details for yourself.
Do we really need to re-employ the failed cold war strategery of arming the winning side by arming both sides again? Please tell me there's something that the Democratic congress can do to put this on the back burner until saner heads prevail at the WhiteWash House...
Many thanks to Kathy at Shakespeare's Sister and the Gun Toting Liberal for bringing this morsel of information to my attention!

No, I'm not going to the Simpsons premiere. Just like I still haven't seen The Order Of the Phoenix or Sicko yet, and probably won't be for a while, because I'm a cheap-a$$ Belgian thrifty, conscientious individual who can wait until these movies get to cable TV (and I won't have to pay movie theater prices, or miss anything because I have to go to the bathroom). I'm also going to wait for the paperback version of the Deathly Hallows and/or borrow a hard cover copy from one of my more impatient friends.
There is a new vice here at the Funny Farm, however. Weeds comes to our glazzies very highly (cough) recommended from discerning friends who watch waaaaaay more TV than I do, and can sift out a lot of the dreck for me. And it has not disappointed - the plot twists, dialogue, and situational comedy are amazingly well put together. If you get a chance, take come time out of your busy schedule and catch an episode or two (they stand up well on their own, but also tie together into an interesting plot that runs through the series).
Apologies for the dearth of bloggy goodness around here, but there are a some personal things that I want to talk about once I get a better understanding of what's going on. I can say that I recently visited a health care professional who has recommended some lifestyle changes and prescribed some chemical enhancements to my daily intake. And that it's kinda scary when the doc tells you that she can't calculate your cholesterol count because it's too far off the scale to be measured...
Random guerrilla blogging may take place from undisclosed locations in the North American midwest over the course of the upcoming weekend.

For the record: the next time a Reich Wingnut wants an example of a christian terrorist, please let them know about this guy.
A Cypress man charged in the death of a Southwest Airlines flight attendant said Saturday that he was doing God's work when he went to a Montrose-area bar last month, hunting for a gay man to kill. "I believe I'm Elijah, called by God to be a prophet," said 26-year-old Terry Mark Mangum, charged with murder June 11. " ... I believe with all my heart that I was doing the right thing." Interviewed in the Brazoria County Jail Saturday morning, Mangum said he feels no remorse for killing 46-year-old Kenneth Cummings Jr., whom relatives described as a "loving" son who never forgot a holiday and a devoted uncle who had set up college funds for his niece and nephew. He worked at Southwest for 24 years. Mangum, who described himself as "definitely not a homosexual," said God called on him to "carry out a code of retribution" by killing a gay man because "sexual perversion" is the "worst sin." Mangum believed Cummings to be gay. "I planned on sending him to hell," he said. Cummings disappeared June 4. His charred remains were found June 16, buried on a 50-acre ranch near San Antonio owned by Mangum's 90-year-old grandfather. [snip] Mangum — who claimed he has studied the Bible for "thousands and thousands and thousands of hours" — said God first commanded him to kill during a "visitation," or dream, while he was in prison in 2001. He said his victim must be a man because men "carry the harvest of the sinner." After six months' planning, Mangum said, he went to E.J.'s, a Montrose-area club, where he met Cummings. After they drank a couple of beers, he said, the two went to Cummings' home in Pearland. Mangum said he stabbed Cummings with a "6-inch blade." "It's not that I'm a bad dude," he said, expressing concern that people might view him as "strange." Pausing briefly, he said, "I love God." |
Much more over at the link. Go read (warning: not for the faint of heart)...
It seems the voices in his head told him that he was the latest version of the prophet Elijah, and that he was doing the Invisible Sky Fairy's bidding when he stabbed another human to death and buried him on his grandfather's farm. Which pretty much sounds just as wacky as anything I've heard people claim comes out of islamic terrorists.
And it is my humble opinion that this is yet another data point suggesting that a scientific hypothesis positing that
extreme religious fervor can cause some humans to exhibit symptoms of violently insane behavior in support of their religion

would be worthy of investigation.

In a move that surprised no one, the Clown Who Would Be America's King gives a nice middle finger to the Constitution, the rule of law, and anyone who thinks that this administration will even consider playing anything but Calvinball for the next couple of years.
I thought I'd take a minute and translate a bit of monkey speak for the studio audience*.

This is completely over the line - so far that I can see no reason for any Democratic politicians to co-operate with these criminals in any manner whatsoever on anything at all. I would hope that this should cause Senator Reid and Representative Pelosi to consider impeachment for all parties involved.
If not, then shut the whole damn thing down now. Point out that there is no basis for any sort of working relationship with lying traitors, shut the Republican'ts out of the committees, send highly partisan bills to the Oval Orifice - everything that they've done to Democratic politicians for the last six plus years that has been legal, and some of the stuff they did to the Clenis, too - for as long as they support the current junta. See if we can find a few more Republican'ts to more than pair off Holy Joe, and remove him from committees, too. No more dealings with conservative press outlets, either. Cancel Faux Snooze Democratic smear assaults debates. Reinstate the Fairness Doctrine, and require broadcasting to be somewhat more reality-based when they claim to be reporting facts. Continue to hold all to these standards, including those in your own party. The key here is to put in place a system that will play by the rules, and enforce them fairly and correctly.
The problem here is not the system. The problem is that there is no way to succeed by playing fair within the system. If you have to lie, cheat, and steal to survive, and you have a fundamental problem with lying, cheating, and stealing as lifestyle choices, how do you survive?
I've seen this essay before, kids. This is How The Deciderer Spent His 2007 Summer Vacation, and he's got his essay ready to turn in at the beginning of the next major marketing season. He's also got things pretty much set up for some August brush clearing again. If only those dang monsoons would go away!
* - and, no, there's no bashing of the Great Green Deity Nadar in this one, so you radical lefties can all lay off the unjustified criticism and misplaced adulation for someone who helped the Republican'ts lay waste to democracy for the last seven years...
** - this unsubstantiated claim based on the probable result of outing a covert CIA operative during wartime and exposing all those who ever came in contact with her to retribution and/or suspicion of spying for the United States.
